In a first-of-its-kind diplomatic visit, India's President Droupadi Murmu will undertake an official trip to Slovakia this week the first Presidential visit to Slovakia since 1996. The visit will take the relationship between India and Slovakia to the next level from the rapidly expanding partnership in areas like business, technology, automobile manufacturing, pharma, and defence.
In an interview with CNBC-TV18, India's Ambassador to Slovakia Apoorva Srivastava reiterated the strategic value of the visit. "Slovakia is very important for India in terms of economic engagement with the EU. The country can serve as a gateway to Europe for India," Srivastava stated, pointing out that 2025 could prove to be a milestone year for bilateral ties.
Indian-Slovakian trade has experienced significant growth, increasing by approximately 15% every year and reaching $1.3 billion in 2024 — crossing the $1 billion threshold for the first time. India imports mainly engineering, electronic, and motor vehicles and exports footwear, textiles, and vehicle parts to Slovakia.
Presently, there are approximately 6,000 Indian nationals, including 300 students, in Slovakia. There is said to be a growing demand for Indian talent, which has led to the two governments agreeing on a mobility partnership for ease of movement of people.
During her visit, President Murmu will have bilateral discussions and delegation-level interactions with Slovak President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico. She will also be hosted at a state banquet.
In defence cooperation, even though India and Slovakia have a mutual understanding since 1995, they are now pursuing stronger cooperation, such as cooperative production and joint military exercises. The visit should help unlock new possibilities for strategic ties, establishing Slovakia as India's principal Central European partner.
