IIT Madras Joins Forces with Shell for New Energy Research Centre
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras’ Energy Consortium and Shell India have announced a partnership to establish the Shell IITM Centre for Energy Research (SICER). This collaboration, set to last for five years under SICER, aims to advance the commercialization of energy sector technologies, as well as foster research and development, piloting, and innovation.
“We have had several successful bilateral research and development projects with IIT Madras in the past. This collaboration will further enable us to share our knowledge and resources with IITM while leveraging their expertise, R&D facilities, and innovation ecosystem to address one of the world’s most critical challenges – the energy transition”, said Ajay Mehta, VP of engineering technology at Shell.
The inauguration ceremony of the Shell IITM Centre for Energy Research (SICER) was held at the Shell Technology Centre in Bengaluru. The partnership aims to foster research collaborations in the energy transition sector, support the incubation of energy startups, and establish the Shell Chair Professorship to facilitate knowledge exchange between Shell and IIT Madras.
Satyanarayanan Seshadri has been appointed as the inaugural Shell Chair Professor at IIT Madras. Seshadri, who leads the Energy Consortium at IIT Madras, is also a faculty member in the Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering at the institute. “Our mission is to unlock the full potential of our partnership by leveraging our shared interests in areas such as R&D and startup incubation, while also actively seeking out new opportunities for collaboration”, Seshadri said.
