IIT Kharagpur Gets NMC Approval for MD, MBBS Plan Paused
  • IIT Kharagpur to offer MD programme after receiving NMC approval.
  • Training to take place at upgraded campus hospital SPMSH.
  • MBBS launch delayed due to infrastructure gaps.

IIT Kharagpur is set to start it's first-ever Doctor of Medicine (MD) course, following approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC). The institute, known for its engineering and technology programs, is now stepping into the field of postgraduate medical education with a vision to integrate healthcare and advanced technology.

Suman Chakraborty,Director, said that IIT Kharagpur is well-positioned to offer the MD programme, thanks to its expertise in healthcare technology and access to qualified medical professionals. The institute's Board of Governors has already cleared the proposal, and the formal application will be submitted once the NMC opens its online registration portal.

The first batch is expected to have 10 to 20 students, who will receive clinical training at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (SPMSH), located on campus. SPMSH, which earlier provided outpatient services, is now being upgraded to handle inpatient care and surgeries. A new operation theatre is already functional, and work is underway to develop a 220 bed inpatient facility to support the MD course.

Meanwhile, the institute’s earlier plan to launch an MBBS programme has been put on hold. Senior officials stated that the current infrastructure is not sufficient for undergraduate medical education. The MBBS course will be revisited once the necessary facilities are fully developed.
