Kanpur: IIT-Kanpur has tied up with a medical college to design knee implants that would soon replace the high-priced internationally designed models and make the treatment economical.
IIT Kanpur will provide technical support to GSVM Medical College to jointly design these knee implants.
The implants, currently being used for treatment are expensive and cost between Rs 35,000 to 40,000. However, with the new indigenously designed implants the cost would come down to approximately around Rs 13,000.
"For people suffering from knee pain, a technique known as High Tibial Osteotomy (HTO) can serve as a substitute for knee replacement surgery. It has a faster recovery period and is significantly cheaper."
"Due to the use of internationally designed implants, even HTO was proving to be extremely expensive for patients.
