IIT Delhi & AIIMS Partner to Drive AI-Powered Healthcare Innovation
  • IIT Delhi and AIIMS Delhi signed an MoU to establish a Center of Excellence for AI in Healthcare.
  • The initiative is backed by a Rs 330 crore grant under the 'Make AI in India' program.
  • The center will focus on AI solutions to enhance national healthcare services and accessibility.
In a significant step towards revolutionizing healthcare through artificial intelligence, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to set up a Center of Excellence for AI in Healthcare (AI-CoE). The collaboration was formalized at a ceremony held at IIT Delhi, with Prof. M. Srinivas, Director, AIIMS Delhi, and Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, signing the agreement.
The AI-CoE aims to develop advanced AI-driven solutions to support major national health programs and enhance the quality, accessibility, and affordability of healthcare across India. The initiative stems from a Rs 330 crore grant jointly awarded to the two premier institutes in 2023 by the Ministry of Education under the national mission titled 'Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India'. The newly established center will serve as the executing body for this transformative grant.
Prof. M. Srinivas emphasized the transformative potential of the initiative, stating, “This MoU marks the beginning of far-reaching collaborative research that has the potential to change the face of healthcare in the country”.
Prof. Rangan Banerjee shared similar sentiments, noting, “A partnership between AIIMS and IIT Delhi has the potential to transform Artificial Intelligence for affordable healthcare. We are delighted to be shaping this national center of excellence and hope that our output will impact the lives of Indians”.
Leading the AI-CoE initiative from AIIMS Delhi will be Dr. Krithika Rangarajan, Chief Project Manager, who said, “As we venture into this exciting new space, we look forward to guiding the marriage of healthcare with technology. We remain focused on keeping patients at the center of this effort and hope to build mechanisms that would benefit every citizen of the country”.
From IIT Delhi, the initiative will be spearheaded by Prof. Chetan Arora, Chief Project Manager, who highlighted the broader vision of the CoE. “This center will serve as a key research and resource hub at both national and international levels. Our goal is to develop cutting-edge AI solutions that upscale health services, upskill healthcare providers, and improve healthcare access in remote and underserved areas”, he said.
The AI-CoE represents a pioneering collaboration between two of India’s top institutions and is poised to become a benchmark for AI-led healthcare innovation in India and beyond.
