ICAR-NMRI Partners to Improve Meat Testing and Food Safety Standards

The ICAR–National Meat Research Institute (NMRI) in Hyderabad has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Waters India Private Ltd, a global leader in analytical instruments, and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad. The collaboration aims to develop and validate advanced testing techniques for detecting banned and regulated substances, such as antibiotics, in meat and meat products. This initiative intends to enhance the safety of food products, ensure good quality animal-based food products, and modernize the Indian meat industry.

During the ceremony, Dr. S. B. Barbuddhe, Director of ICAR-NMRI, highlighted the significance of this partnership. "This initiative will play a pivotal role in advancing food safety efforts in the country. It will ensure that consumers receive high-quality, safe animal-sourced foods", he said.

The National Research Centre on Meat (NRCM), the research wing of ICAR-NMRI, is a premier institution dedicated to addressing challenges in the meat sector. Its mission revolves around modernizing the industry by developing innovative technologies for meat production, processing, and utilization. These efforts benefit not only meat producers and processors but also consumers by ensuring safe and sustainable practices.

Additionally, NRCM offers skill development training programs in meat processing and value addition, supported by its cutting-edge facilities. These include a modern slaughterhouse, a pilot meat processing plant, and state-of-the-art laboratories, making the center a hub for industry-ready expertise.

By leveraging the expertise of Waters India in analytical instruments and the research prowess of IIT Hyderabad, ICAR-NMRI aims to set a benchmark for meat safety research, fostering consumer confidence and strengthening the nation's food safety ecosystem.

This collaboration marks a significant step forward in elevating the standards of food safety and quality in India.
