Hyundai Motors India Commits to 100% Renewable Energy
Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is making significant strides in its commitment to sustainability, with an aim to achieve 100% renewable energy for its operations. Currently fulfilling 64% of its energy requirements from renewable sources, the automaker is set to outpace many competitors in the country in reaching this ambitious target.
Participating in the RE100 global corporate renewable energy initiative by the Climate Group, HMIL aligns with hundreds of businesses committed to achieving 100% renewable electricity. Gopala Krishnan C.S., Chief Manufacturing Officer at HMIL, emphasized the company's dedication to sustainability, stating, "Our operations are driven by a strong sense of responsibility towards the environment and our communities".
The company's Energy Management System focuses on conserving energy and resources, incorporating low-carbon practices and reducing emissions across its value chain. Notable practices include a complete transition to LED lighting in the plant and all offices since 2017, thermo-ceramic coating on furnaces, waste heat recovery in paint shops, and the installation of a 10 MW rooftop solar plant at its manufacturing facility in Chennai.
HMIL monitors and addresses both direct and indirect emissions, actively exploring opportunities to reduce carbon emissions. The company has been strategically purchasing green power from the Indian Energy Exchange, resulting in a renewable energy portfolio of 64%.
In addition to energy initiatives, HMIL has implemented a zero liquid discharge system for water management, achieving 80% water neutrality through recycled RO water and a 30% reduction in water usage over the past five years.
Recognizing its efforts, HMIL has received awards such as the 'Noteworthy Water Efficient Unit' at the CII’s 8th Water Innovations Summit - 2022, and the 'National Energy Leader' award for consecutive years in 2021 and 2020 at the CII’s 'National Awards for Excellence in Energy Management.'
Dedicated to minimizing harmful substances, the company has seen a reduction in hazardous and non-hazardous waste through initiatives like implementing screw press filters.
Recently unveiling a 10-year investment plan, HMIL is poised to expand its electric vehicle range and enhance existing car and SUV platforms. With a strong commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, HMIL is actively contributing to building a sustainable future for the next generation, aligning with its vision for positive action and a better tomorrow.
