Hyundai Motor India to Establish Hydrogen Innovation Centre at IIT-M Thaiyur Campus
Hyundai Motor India has announced plans to set up a Hydrogen Innovation Centre at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras’ Thaiyur campus, with an investment of Rs 180 crore. The new facility, set to be constructed on a 65,000 sq ft plot of land, will focus on advancing hydrogen technology research and development.
The foundation stone for the Hydrogen Innovation Centre was laid by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave held in Chennai. The initiative underscores Hyundai Motor India’s commitment to boosting Tamil Nadu’s status as a hub for automotive innovation and pioneering alternative fuel technologies.
The partnership involves Hyundai Motor India Ltd., the state-backed investment promotion agency Guidance Tamil Nadu, and IIT Madras. This collaboration aims to accelerate the development and adoption of hydrogen technology in India, aligning with the broader vision of creating a sustainable and technologically advanced automotive ecosystem.
Professor V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized the institute’s role in driving India’s transformation into a technology and innovation powerhouse. "IIT Madras is honored to collaborate with Hyundai Motor India Ltd and Guidance Tamil Nadu on this venture. The Hydrogen Innovation Centre will play a pivotal role in fostering breakthroughs in hydrogen mobility and creating a vibrant research ecosystem", Kamakoti said.
The centre is expected to be a catalyst for innovation in hydrogen technology, supporting startups and researchers in the field. It will focus on several key areas, including the development of electrolysis technology for green hydrogen production, localization of manufacturing processes, and supply chain advancements. The facility will also feature a fuel cell test station and pilot demonstrators to advance the practical application of electrolyzers and fuel cells.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd’s Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer, Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, expressed the company’s commitment to supporting Tamil Nadu’s vision for a sustainable future. "Hyundai Motor India Ltd is dedicated to contributing to the state's transition towards alternative fuels. We believe the Hydrogen Innovation Centre will significantly accelerate the adoption of hydrogen mobility in Tamil Nadu", Sivaramakrishnan stated.
The establishment of the Hydrogen Innovation Centre marks a significant step in India’s efforts to advance green technologies and position itself as a leader in the global hydrogen economy.
