How to Book and Attempt UK Theory Test

The moment you were waiting for all your childhood has arrived. Now, you can drive under supervision. And the time for you to drive without supervision is approaching fast. But you have to take a few steps to reach there. And attempting theory steps is one of them.

Here is how you can book and attempt your theory test to promptly reach the next level.

How to Book UK Theory Test

You know that a theory test will assess your knowledge about the skill of driving, traffic rules, and road safety measures. You are ready to learn more but before that, you have to book the test.

Fortunately, booking this exam is easy if you have your provisional license. Head over to the DVSA website and enter the details it asks for. Keep these documents within reach when booking it:

Your provisional license with a residential address of Great Britain or Northern Ireland – if you haven’t already gotten your provisional license, get it. You cannot book – or attempt – your theory test without this license;

Your credit or debit card detail to pay for the test fee via secure payment channel of DVSA – it amounts to £23 for car and motorcycle drivers; and

Your email address to receive a confirmation mail.

Those candidates who don’t have an email address will have to book their test via phone and their confirmation letter will be delivered by post.

How to Attempt the Theory Test

Now that you have booked the test, you should focus more on preparing for it. The three steps for preparing for the UK test are studying DVSA books, practicing theory test and the hazard perception section from a reputable preparation site, and getting on the road under supervision.

When the exam date arrives, you keep yourself relaxed. This test is no different than other exams you have attempted till now in that it also makes you nervous. Follow the calming routine you practice for conventional exams a day before the exam and on exam day. Then, arrive early at the test center.

The only document you need to bring to your exam center is your provisional driving license. Note that the test is theoretical in nature so you will not be riding your vehicle. You should also ensure to wear a face mask to attempt the test.

During the Exam

The UK theory test is a time-limited exam and you can only successfully complete it if you are alert and agile. Take your time studying the question before answering it. If an answer isn’t obvious, you can move on to the next question and return after attempting all other questions.

You will be awarded a 3-minute break between two sections of the test. Use this break to relax before starting the hazard perception section. Note that the second section is there to assess your alertness more than any concept. Remain focused on the screen and don’t click too much as clicking too many times will result in a lower score.

Take Away

Learning the theory is an important part of the UK theory test. But if you don’t use the right strategy to attempt the test, you will score low marks and may become a part of 50% of candidates who fail this test.
