3. Nilofer Bibi honour killing case in Kolkata:

Nilofer Bibi honour killing case was the first ever honour killing case in Kolkata. In this grievous incident,  Mehtab Alam, a 29-year-old trader and brother of Nilofer dragged his sister out on the street and beheaded her with a sword in broad daylight, in front of full public glare. Mehtab later surrendered before the police with his sister’s head dangling in his hand. Nilofer was already married to Akbar for eight years and had a 6-year-old son and a 4-year-old daughter. But later that year, she ran away with Firoz Hossain, on the pretext of being harassed and tortured by Akbar’s brother. It is alleged that Nilofer had a premarital affair with Firoz. This angered Mehtab, leading him to take the extreme step as he felt that it was immoral for her to live with her lover when she was still married and he also felt that it will bring disgrace to the family’s name.
