Nirupama Pathak, a New Delhi–based journalist, was allegedly murdered by her own mother. Nirupama wanted to marry a fellow journalist who belonged to a lower caste and whose baby she was expecting. She visited her parents with the hope of convincing them, but was locked in a bathroom and later on she was found dead. The family claimed Nirupama had killed herself, and lodged a case against her boyfriend for rape and abetting suicide. But the postmortem results revealed Nirupama had been choked to dead; the police arrested her mother, Sudha Pathak.
