Gopichand P. Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group and a leader in global business, passed away in London on Tuesday at the age of 85, according to a PTI report. A central figure in the Hinduja family’s second generation, Gopichand often called 'GP', took over as Chairman after the passing of his elder brother, Srichand Hinduja, in 2023.
He is survived by his wife Sunita, two sons, Sanjay and Dheeraj, and daughter Rita. Earlier this year, The Sunday Times Rich List named Gopichand and his family as the wealthiest individuals in Britain.
Gopichand started his journey in 1959 in Mumbai with the family’s trading business, which was focused on Indo-Middle East operations. Under his leadership, the Hinduja Group transformed into a global conglomerate. Some of his landmark decisions include the acquisition of Gulf Oil in 1984 and the revival of Ashok Leyland in 1987, a move that went on to become one of India’s biggest corporate success stories.
His vision expanded the group into various sectors such as power, infrastructure, and energy, with major projects across India. Gopichand held honorary doctorates in law and economics from the University of Westminster and Richmond College, London.
