Here's How Kerala Is Making The Most Of Organic Farming
BANGALORE: Kerala is setting an example for all the other states in the country by promoting organic farming. The increased use of fertilizers and poisonous pesticides in farming results in various diseases. The malayali society still remembers the dark days of Edosulphan. Thus, people are taking initiative for organic farming revolution in God’s own country, reports The Economic Times.
As a result of urbanization, villages are being modified and high literacy rate opens the door to white collar jobs. People have forgotten about farming and are importing vegetables and fruits from neighboring states. This is what exactly happened in Kerala. Inability to cultivate necessary crops led the state to be dependent on neighboring states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
As the quantities of purchases made by Kerala increased, the supplier states started using fertilizers and pesticides which are highly harmful to human body. These imported vegetables and fruits had after effects on various age groups which forced the State Food Safety Council to take initiative to find out the root cause of all problems. This study showed the after effects of such crops.
The famous actress Manju Warrier after a sabbatical of 15 years conveyed a social message to promote organic farming in Kerala. The northern district of Kerala, Kazarkode will soon be announced as “Organic district”. The organic revolution will be successful only when people understand the need and use their small areas of land as well as terrace to cultivate the crops for daily use.
