Coal India Ltd (CIL), a state-owned entity, announced that the government of Haryana has shown interest in purchasing electricity from CIL's planned power plant in Odisha. Haryana aims to secure adequate electricity supply to fulfill its growing energy requirements. “Coal India Ltd (CIL) on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Haryana Power Purchase Centre which expressed its interest in purchasing 800 MW of power from ‘Mahanadi Basin Power Ltd’ (MBPL) a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL)", CIL said in a statement.
According to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), electricity will be procured in accordance with Section 62 of the Electricity Act, 2003. “This refers to determining the power tariff in accordance with the provisions of the act, by the appropriate commission, for the supply of electricity by a generating company to a distribution licensee", it said.
The Memorandum of Understanding was signed in the presence of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. CIL is in the process of establishing a 4,000 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in two phases in Odisha's Sundargarh district through MBPL. Last month, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the establishment of a 1,600 MW capacity plant in the initial phase.
CIL's forthcoming thermal power plants will utilize super-critical technology, resulting in a notably reduced carbon footprint compared to traditional coal-based plants. Situated near pitheads, these plants offer advantages such as optimized coal costs, minimal transit loss, increased plant load factor, and mitigated environmental impact. CIL is venturing into diversification initiatives, with a strong emphasis on establishing coal-based pithead power plants. Notably, Coal India contributes to over 80 percent of the domestic coal production.
