Govt intends to meet organizations on Digital India Act before delivery

According to insiders, the government will likely soon begin multi-city, multi-stakeholder workshops to debate important elements of the new Digital India Act before it is made available for public comment.

These meetings, scheduled to start from Hyderabad, are likely to see top executives from companies such as Meta Inc, Google, Microsoft and others attending.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) is currently working on the draft, which will replace the Information Technology (IT) Act of 2000.

According to sources, the new Act will be an overarching framework which is likely to introduce provisions related to data storage, online gaming, cyberbullying, doxing, and other cyber-crime.

It may also introduce provisions to classify and regulate various online portals such as e-commerce websites, and AI-enabled platforms, among others.

“The Act has to be forward-looking. It will contain enabling provisions for executive rulemaking as and when time and technology change and move forward,” a senior government official said.
Earlier this year, the IT ministry had withdrawn a version of the Data Protection Bill after it had been languishing in Parliament for more than three years.

In February 2022 that the IT ministry may draft a completely new version of the data protection bill.

The new version, renamed the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Bill of 2022, was released in November.

All the regulations are likely to be moved under the umbrella Digital India Act after the law is passed, government officials said.
