In a significant change to make user experience easier, Google has stated that it will eventually eliminate country-specific domain names for its Search service and send all users across the globe to a single domain google.com. This shift brings an end to a tradition where users from various countries accessed search results through localized domains like google.co.uk, google.fr, or google.co.in.
The update, rolling out gradually, is an indicator of Google's overall push toward unifying its platform and ensuring consistency. Even though the URLs will now point to google.com by default, users will not get search results based on their actual-time location. So the person who happens to be browsing Google Search in Japan will keep getting results appropriate for Japan even though the domain shows google.com.
This is not an abrupt change in the delivery of results. From 2017, Google already utilized the physical locations of users to assess relevance in search instead of exclusively being based on domain extensions. The future adjustment simply brings the structure of domains in line with the already-established practice, thus improving the experience for users regardless of their geographical location.
Google assured users that the change will not affect the way it deals with legal obligations or region-specific content. Visibility and accessibility of content will continue to abide by local laws and regulations, even though the URL now displays google.com rather than a country-specific domain.
But users who have personalized settings like language or region options might need to reset their settings after the transition. Google said that the changes would be required for certain users who depend on customized setups based on country domains.
The technology giant feels that the increasing power of mobile use and AI-powered tools in Search has reduced the importance of domain extensions. Rather, location data in real time is now the key driver for providing personalized search results. By removing country-coded domains, Google wants to simplify the Search experience and concentrate on what is most important providing accurate, relevant, and timely results wherever the user is.
As the rollout has already begun, Google users worldwide can now look forward to seeing the change in full swing over the next few months, ending a virtual age of localized Google web addresses.
