The inaugural Research event by Google took place in Bengaluru, gathering prominent AI practitioners and researchers to explore regional solutions and serve as a hub for collaborative discussions. "India has tremendous technical talent; there’s a long tradition of computer science students in India doing amazing things. Anyone with an interest in computer science is turning their attention to machine learning and what it can do. India is well-positioned in this area because there are many students who are already in this field and people already in this industry. It’s an important thing across the world", said Jeff Dean, chief scientist at Google DeepMind and Google Research.
Dean mentioned his involvement in promoting Google's initiative to develop AI models in 1,000 languages, with the goal of ensuring accessibility across major linguistic groups. He emphasized the significance of this effort, noting that numerous languages spoken by large populations lack sufficient written resources, and leveraging AI technologies can play a crucial role in making them accessible.
Dean also addressed the swift advancements in AI, underscoring the significance of acknowledging the "rough edges and potential pitfalls" associated with scaling machine learning models. Despite notable progress in the factual accuracy of models compared to a year or two ago, it remains crucial to proactively address and mitigate the shortcomings of the technology.
"This has been a great event, which has brought together the top AI/ML researchers of India in one place, and it’s a big boon to have Google drive this. The talks have proved to be a useful update on what our colleagues are doing around the country. The experience has been eye-opening, and I hope this event serves as a seed for greater collaboration between both academic researchers and industry", said Balaraman Ravindran, Professor of Computer Science, IIT Madras, during the event, according to Google.
