Google Doodle Celebrates Indian Scientist Anna Mani
Google mentioned one of India’s first female scientists in its special tributes Anna Mani by attributing a doodle on her 104th birth anniversary. Anna Modayil Mani was born in 1918 and was a physicist and meteorologist from Kerala who served as former deputy director general of the Indian Meteorological Department. Anna’s foremost interest in reading books curled her into a passionate scientist while not being stuck in mundane life.
At a young age, Anna was interested in physics and completed her B.Sc honors in physics and chemistry from Chennai. Following completion of her graduation, Anna worked with Nobel Laureate, Professor C.V Raman and researched the optical properties of ruby and diamond.
At times, Anna was mesmerized by meteorology and in 1945 she went to Imperial College, London, and completed a specialization in meteorological instruments. Prior to that, Anna went to the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru for Research in 1940.
Throughout his life, Anna was inspired by the nationalist movements of Mahatma Gandhi. There was always an inspiration that led her to wear khadi clothes and Anna’s life story was inspiring even before she joined higher education.
At her eight-year age, Anna read almost all the Malayalam books in the public library and at 12 she read all the English books. Anna’s thoughts circled around her way to move forward in her career and were influenced by her book reading routine.
At the Thumba rocket launching facility, Anna had set up a meteorological observatory and an instrumentation tower while she was also a member of the International Ozone Association. Anna’s contributions to Meteorology had her name published in a personal interview in the World Meteorological Organization on her 100th birth anniversary.
All due to Google-Doodle, Anna Mani is being remembered on her birth anniversary and her contributions to Indian Meteorology achieve special mentioning. Today, Anna’s story inspires all of us and surely will help the students to stay inclined in pursuing research in science and technology.
