Gold Price Fall Adds Sparkle to Dhanteras and Diwali Sales
  • Gold & silver prices dropped sharply on Dhanteras 2025, boosting festive buying.
  • Jewellery sales hit Rs 85,000 crore in two days, with strong demand nationwide.
  • Total festive sales expected to cross Rs 1 lakh crore during the five-day celebration.
Gold prices in India saw a welcome drop on Diwali 2025, bringing cheer to retail buyers across the country. After several days of continuous price increases, the rates of gold and silver fell sharply on the day of Dhanteras, sparking a rush among festive shoppers.
Gold prices declined across all variants 24K, 22K, and 18K. As of October 20, 24-carat gold fell by Rs 170 per 10 grams, bringing the price to Rs 1,30,690. Similarly, 22-carat gold dropped by Rs 150 per 10 grams to Rs 1,19,800, while 18-carat gold slid by Rs 120 to Rs 98,020 per 10 grams. For larger quantities, 100 grams of 22-carat gold now costs Rs 11,98,000, down by Rs 1,500. Meanwhile, 100 grams of 24-carat gold stands at Rs 13,06,900, after slipping by Rs 1,700.
Silver prices also saw a steep decline, breaking the strong rally seen in recent weeks. This drop in both gold and silver rates encouraged buyers to flock to jewellery stores nationwide, taking advantage of the lower prices during the festive season.
Rajesh Rokde, Chairman of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), shared that the response this Dhanteras has been “fantastic.” He said, “Across India, nearly 50 to 60 tonnes of jewellery were sold over the two days of Dhanteras, amounting to around Rs 85,000 crore. In terms of volume, sales are at the same level as last year, but in value, we’ve seen a strong 35-40% growth”.
Silver jewellery has been the star of this festive season, with sales nearly doubling as more customers chose silver over gold. Since Dhanteras fell on a weekend and was followed by Diwali and Bhau Beej, the five-day festive period is expected to bring record-breaking sales. Rokde added that total jewellery sales could reach 100 to 120 tonnes, with a total value between Rs 1 lakh crore and Rs 1.35 lakh crore.
With prices lower and festive spirits high, jewellers across India are witnessing one of the best Diwali seasons in recent years.
