Foxconn Expands 'Made in India' iPhone Push With 300-Acre Campus,40,000 Jobs Coming
  • Foxconn is building a 300-acre iPhone manufacturing campus near Bengaluru, in Devanahalli, Karnataka.
  • The project is named 'Project Elephant' and is part of Apple’s China+1 strategy.
  • The company is investing Rs 21,000 crore in the facility.
In a significant push under Apple’s 'Made in India' strategy, Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn has begun constructing dormitory-style housing at its massive 300-acre iPhone assembly facility in Devanahalli, near Bengaluru. The Rs 21,000 crore investment signals Apple’s growing confidence in India as a manufacturing hub, with CEO Tim Cook stating that a majority of iPhones sold in the United States will soon carry the 'Made in India' tag.
'Nicknamed Project Elephant', the Devanahalli campus lies close to Bengaluru’s international airport and serves as a central pillar in Apple’s China+1 strategy, which aims to reduce dependence on Chinese manufacturing amid escalating geopolitical tensions and trade uncertainties. The facility is expected to begin shipping iPhones by June 2025, with an ambitious target of assembling 100,000 units by December that year.
Phase 1 of the project, spanning 2023–24, has already seen Rs 3,000 crore in investment, with a similar amount earmarked for Phase 2 between 2026 and 2027. One of the key features of the Devanahalli plant is its integrated worker housing plan. Foxconn is constructing dormitories to accommodate approximately 40,000 employees marking India’s largest worker accommodation effort of its kind. The initiative also prioritizes hiring women, who are expected to constitute 50 to 80 percent of the workforce.
“Women travel from far and wide. The dorms will help them avoid that”. a male employee told The Economic Times. Additionally, Foxconn has partnered with real estate firm BCD Group to lease 900 residential units in Hoskote, designed to house 6,000 to 8,000 female workers. These homes, developed with an investment of Rs 500 crore, are part of a larger self-contained township featuring commercial areas, schools, healthcare, and entertainment facilities, according to BCD Group MD Angad Singh Bedi.
Work has already begun on production lines for the iPhone 17 model, further underlining the project's rapid progress. Industry insiders say Foxconn is aiming to produce 25 to 30 million iPhones in India in 2025 more than double the country's current output.
Foxconn’s expansion is part of Apple’s broader strategy to diversify its global supply chain. Apart from the Karnataka facility, Foxconn operates plants in Tamil Nadu and Telangana. A recently launched unit in Hyderabad has also begun manufacturing AirPods, expanding Apple’s production footprint in India.
Foxconn is also working closely with Tata Electronics, which has acquired the Indian operations of longtime Apple vendors Wistron and Pegatron. According to a previous Reuters report, Apple is fast-tracking efforts to shift a majority of U.S. iPhone production to India by the end of 2026 a move driven by the risk of rising tariffs and ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.
