First charge sheet against Suresh Kalmadi

Bangalore: The Common Wealth Games scam which resulted in a pandemonium has come into the limelight. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed its first charge sheet today, in the case dealing with alleged irregularities in the preparations for the 2010 Commonwealth Games (CWG). The charge sheet is against two companies and 10 people, including CWG Organizing Committee heavyweights Suresh Kalmadi, Lalit Bhanot and V.K. Verma. The CBI has satisfactory evidence to pin down the culprits for alleged bungling in a 141 crore contract. The chargesheet has been filed against Kalmadi and his associates who are currently sited in Tihar jail. Which also includes Verma, Lalit Bhanot, Sanjay Mohindroo, M Jayachandran, TS Darbai and Kalmadi's personal assistant Shekhar Deorukhkar. Kalmadi's associates are alleged of irregularities committed while rewarding the TSR contract. Other accused in the charge sheet are Swiss Timing-Omega, Gem International and AKR Constructions. Sources said the discrepancies like payment to non-existent parties, willful delay in execution of contracts, inflated prices and bungling in purchase and renting of overlays including equipment worth several crores through tendering have been noticed. The agency has registered 11 FIRs in the cases related to CWG scam. Kalmadi allegedly tripled the cost of the event to nearly $6 billion and embarrassed India before the entire world in the run up to the games owing to shabby preparations. Kalmadi attempted to distance himself from the timing, scoring and results' contract and pointed fingers in other directions. Kalmadi had been arrested along with OC joint Director General, sport, A S V Prasad and Deputy Director General, procurement, Surjit Lal on April 25, 2011 for allegedly awarding an illegal contract to the Swiss firm for the mega sporting event last year causing a loss of over 90 crore. This scam has caused a smash up of about 95 crore loss to exchequer. And Kalmadi and his associates are accused of pilfering the entire amount. CBI will accuse Kalmadi and associates of acting in accordance with a pre-determined script and conferring the contract to the Swiss company, brushing aside claims of competitor, MSL-Spain. The sources have found details of an alleged bribe of 23 crore for the contract. May 23, 2011 was the deadline given to file the charge sheet. Bhanot and Verma who were also arrested on February 23 will be eligible for the bail. CBI spokesperson said, it is alleged that the committee for short listing prospective bidders for TSR was constituted by selecting handpicked officials. The agency found a hand written note from Kalmadi's house, penned sometime in May 2008 and signed by Kalmadi approving the Swiss Timing deal. CBI countered saying, "Kalmadi is deeply involved in the conspiracy of giving contract to Swiss Timing Omega" and "conduct of Kalmadi has done damage to the image of the country". The agency also opposed his bail on the ground that they have to find the money trail'.
