Ericsson Expands R&D Presence in India with New 5G Software Unit in Bengaluru

Ericsson has launched a new Radio Access Network (RAN) Software Research and Development unit in Bengaluru, marking a major step in advancing 5G software innovation from India. The new center will focus on developing next-generation 5G features for Ericsson’s baseband systems, further strengthening India’s position as a global telecom R&D hub.

Nitin Bansal, Managing Director of Ericsson India, said the initiative reflects Ericsson’s long-term vision to tap into India’s growing engineering talent pool. “Setting up this R&D center in Bengaluru for RAN software development represents a significant milestone. We’re combining India’s software strength with Ericsson’s global expertise to accelerate telecom innovation”, he said.

The Bengaluru unit will work closely with Ericsson’s existing R&D centers in Chennai and Gurugram, driving advancements across areas such as 5G and 5G Advanced software, ASIC development, AI frameworks for 6G, and cyber-physical systems. The company is also collaborating with IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, and the Indian Statistical Institute to advance AI and edge computing research.

David Bjore, Head of RAN Software & Compute Platforms at Ericsson, said, “This is the first time we’re developing RAN software entirely in India”. He added,“It underscores India’s growing role in shaping global telecom evolution”.

The expansion aligns with Ericsson’s mission to build resilient, intelligent networks of the future while supporting India’s ambitions to become a global digital innovation powerhouse.
