Eric Garcetti Calls for Stronger US-India Partnership in Defense and Global Peace Efforts

US envoy Eric Garcetti emphasized the deepening of the India-US relationship, highlighting that mutual futures are intertwined, and stressed cooperation in defense, technology, and global peace efforts.

During a keynote address at a defense news conclave at the United Services Institution (USI) in Delhi, US envoy Eric Garcetti emphasized that in an interconnected world, "no war is distant anymore." He asserted the importance of standing for peace and also taking concrete actions to ensure that those who violate peaceful rules cannot continue their war efforts unabated. There exists a need for both the US and India to understand this necessity together.  Forging a stronger partnership between India and the U.S. presents them as a leading force for good in the world.

During his address, Garcetti described India-US ties as deep, ancient, and increasingly broad, particularly due to the culmination of these ties in the form of defense partnerships. The event, attended by numerous defense experts, revolved around the historical and growing relationship between the two nations.

Both the U.S. and India see their futures intertwined, and the world can witness significant achievements through this relationship. Many countries are hopeful that their relationship will succeed and serve as a counterbalance while fostering joint development of weapons and integrated training.

The US and India serve as stabilizing forces in times of emergencies, whether natural disasters or human-caused wars. There is an interconnectedness of the world and a necessity to take action against those who do not adhere to peaceful principles. Recent global events reflect the importance of respecting sovereign borders as a central principle to maintaining peace. Garcetti’s role is to listen and learn, reinforcing the shared values between the US and India.

Garcetti praised the historic state visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US in June 2023 as a highlight in post-Independence India's relations with the US. The enthusiasm and focus on the bilateral relationship have remained strong. The ambassador described the essence of the bilateral ties as "commitment," emphasizing that the relationship is true, trusting, tried, and tested.

While the values of both nations mostly overlap, the challenge lies in moving forward together to build continued deep trust and address current security threats. The stakes for technological innovation, climate action, and military cooperation, noted that the pace of change has never been faster. The US-India defence partnership as one of the most consequential in the world, highlighted the urgency of addressing threats from state actors and climate change.

By reinforcing their commitment to peace, technological innovation, and military cooperation, both nations are poised to become a formidable force for good in the world. Deepening trust and collaboration are crucial, recognizing that the connected futures of India and the US promise significant achievements and enhanced global security.
