Earth Day 2022: Let's Bring back the Eden

Earth Day 2022: Let's Bring back the Eden

World is celebrating International Mother Earth Day today, 22nd of April. In the 1970s, Senator Gaylord Nelson founded the day to endorse ecology and increase awareness of the concerns surrounding the earth. Like every year, more than 195 nations have observed the day, and they commemorate Earth Day to speed efforts to save the planet from harmful impacts such as climate change, global warming, and so forth.

Presently, just being aware of the rampant increase in pollution and other activities that eventually harm the environment and result in the destruction of the planet will not be sufficient to protect our planet. Several challenges such as pollution and smog became primary reasons for environmental damage and are behind the day's existence. The day also highlights the solutions that people can take to prevent the planet. Several events and campaigns are being held worldwide to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The year 2022 marks the 52nd anniversary of the annual celebrations.

In the era of digitalization, the tech giants’ addressing the challenges is vital in making any change effectively. On the occasion of the annual event, Google preached the pressing challenge of climate change through its doodle. “Acting now and together to live more sustainably is necessary to avoid the worst effects of climate change,” the company stated. Today’s Google Doodle uses real-time-lapse imagery from Google Earth Timelapse and other sources to showcase the effect of climate change across different regions.

Talking about the animations, Google will depict the real imagery from Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. This highlights the glacier retreat at the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro from December 1986 to December 2020. On the other hand, the following animation showcases the glacier retreat in Sermersooq, Greenland, from 2000 to 2020. The third animation will depict the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, emphasizing the coral bleaching on Lizard Island from March to May 2016.

Finally, the fourth animation is of the Harz Forests in Elend, Germany. This animation depicts the forests destroyed by bark beetle infestation due to rising temperatures and severe drought from 1995 to 2020.

Throughout the day, the doodle images will change to represent different locations of the earth and the impact of global warming in these areas over the years. Each image will remain on the homepage for several hours at a time.

Theme of Earth Day 2022

As citizens of the world, just one-day effort would not be enough to save the planet. It is the responsibility of every person to nurture and conserve the bountiful gifts of nature, its resources, the environment, and the atmosphere. No matter how small it is, a pledge taken in this direction will lead a long way in the refinement of Mother Earth, causing it a better place to live in for generations to come.

The Earth Day Organisation has assigned a theme on the occasion of the 52nd Earth Day, which is ‘Invest In Our Planet.’ It seeks to improve the climate and the planet’s health in every way possible. Its central motto is to perform a sustainable future through growing green, ethical, and profitable businesses and corporations.

To inspire global citizens for a more optimistic future, the Earth Day official website states, “Now is the time for the unstoppable courage to preserve and protect our health, our families, our livelihoods… together, we must Invest In Our Planet. Because a green future is a prosperous future.”

Every initiative counts. Building on this premise, the organization suggests people act boldly, innovate broadly and implement equitably. This cannot be done by just a handful of people or a few passionate climate change activists. It will need the efforts and support of all.

On this auspicious day Cisco shared its idea, "This year's theme for Earth Day – "Invest in Our Planet" truly resonates with Cisco, as we believe what's good for the planet is good for business. It is a call to action encouraging individuals, enterprises, and governments to create sustainable communities, countries, and economies. And for decades, Cisco has been evolving and expanding the way it positively impacts people and the planet.

We recently announced our commitment to reaching net zero for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across all scopes by 2040. The goal includes reaching net zero for all global Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2025. We also maintain an enterprise-wide circular economy program that focuses on designing out waste, extending the life of products and materials, and regenerating natural systems. Moreover, our Bangalore campus is primarily powered by renewable sources. We also maintain a comprehensive water management system at our campus, including a rainwater harvesting system, an evaporative cooling system, and two sewer treatment plants. These initiatives have helped us envisage our future, make it more sustainable, and ensure a liveable planet for all."

‘Invest In Our Planet’ aims to promote a more sustainable future. Along with popular support, private companies can become active volunteers of Earth Day and work towards a healthy and sustainable life. Smart innovations and adopting a green economy are vital to remaining profitable, scoring strong financials, improving stock performances, and keeping employees happy.

Investing in cleaner forms of energy, adopting sustainable fashion, cutting down on carbon footprint, and taking conscious steps as corporates and citizens to minimize waste, air pollution, and use of plastic are some elements the Earth Day theme taps into.

Besides, by providing incentives to green businesses and encouraging firms to create good Environment Social Governance (ESG) standards, governments will be able to make the eco-friendly option a more lucrative one as well.

Planting trees, switching off electronics during the Earth Hour, imparting climate education, and opting for a simpler and more sustainable lifestyle are the hour's requirement and can be done at individual levels, too. The youth has the power to bring about environmental change by opting for sustainable and ethical brands that are investing in healing the planet.
