EAM Jaishankar to Join Quad Foreign Ministers' Meet in Washington Ahead of Key India Summit
  • EAM S. Jaishankar to attend Quad foreign ministers’ meeting hosted by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
  • Jaishankar to inaugurate a UN exhibition on “The Human Cost of Terrorism” ahead of Pakistan’s UNSC presidency.
  • The meeting will set the stage for India’s upcoming Quad Summit featuring Trump, Albanese, Ishiba, and Modi.

Foreign Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will attend the next Quad foreign ministers' meeting in Washington next week, a crucial diplomatic interaction before the Quad Summit that India hosts later this year, the U.S. State Department announced.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio will be presiding over the meeting, which will also include participation from Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japan's Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi, Principal Deputy Spokesperson Thomas Pigott stated on Thursday.

Pigott highlighted that the upcoming summit is in line with the momentum generated when Rubio convened the Quad foreign ministers' summit as his first diplomatic mission a day after President Donald Trump took office on January 21. He also pointed out that the Quad keeps pushing for the shared goal of a "free, open, and secure Indo-Pacific."

"This is what American leadership looks like: strength, peace, and prosperity," Pigott said.

Ahead of the meeting, Jaishankar posted on X that he spoke on the phone with Penny Wong on Thursday to deliberate on top items on the agenda.

This is the first Quad foreign ministers' meeting after the Pahalgam terror attack. Before heading to Washington, Jaishankar will unveil an exhibition at the United Nations on Monday called "The Human Cost of Terrorism". The function, being organised by India's Permanent Mission to the UN, is intended to highlight the international reach of terrorism and its humane cost. Interestingly, this falls just a day ahead of Pakistan taking over the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council.

The Quad summit next week is set to prepare the ground for India's big summit it will be hosting, in which U.S. President Donald Trump, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, along with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will be invited.

PM Modi had conveyed his eagerness to host Trump during their latest interaction in February, emphasizing the significance of cooperation at the regional level.

While global attention had shifted in recent months to rising tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine, tensions between Israel and Iran have abated for the time being freeing up global attention to revert to the Indo-Pacific, where China's increasing assertiveness is still the main concern for Quad countries.
