FREMONT, CA: Indian-American Dr. Raj Iyer was nominated as the first Chief Information Officer of the US Army after the Pentagon created the post back in July 2020. Now one of the highest-ranking Indian-American civilians in the US Department of Defense, Dr. Iyer is a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and serves as the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Army and guides representation of the Secretary in matters apropos of information management/information technology (IT). Dr. Raj Iyer will direct policies and programs to contemporize the US Army to achieve digital overmatch against near-peer adversaries. Comparable to a three-star General, Iyer will oversee the annual budget of $16 Bn for the US Army's IT departments. Over fifteen thousand civilians and military personnel posted across 100 countries will work under him.

The Army has dedicated itself to leveraging cutting-edge technologies such as cloud computing, robotics, and AI as necessary enablers for future warfighting through a concept called multi-domain operations. Formerly, Iyer was a partner and MD at Deloitte Consulting LLP, where he led numerous technology programs backing government clients. Dr. Iyer has backed a range of defense and commercial consumers on numerous complicated enterprise transformation challenges, including design, innovation, and modernization, throughout his career. He has founded new associations, including the first office of the Chief Technology Officer in the Army, co-founded a thriving technology start-up, and led rehab programs in Obamacare.

Dr. Iyer holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas, Arlington, and multiple master's degrees, including an MBA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an MS in Electrical Engineering from The University of Texas, Arlington. Dr. Iyer, originally a native of Tamil Nadu, grew up in Bengaluru and completed his undergraduate at the NIT Tirchi before moving to the US to pursue higher studies.
