Down Memory Lane: Indian Nobel Prize Winners



#Rajendra Pachuari

Rajendra K Pachauri, is an internationally recognized leader on environmental and energy issues and their policy dimensions. Dr Pachauri is also Chairman of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the world's leading intergovernmental organization for the assessment of climate change.

Dr Pachauri is an economist and industrial engineer by training and has held numerous academic posts in addition to his work with TERI and the IPCC.

He has co-authored above 130 papers, a large number of which are peer-reviewed, and written or co-written 27 books, most of them about energy and the environment.

IPCC under his Chairmanship along with former Vice President Al Gore have been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

#Venkatraman Ramakrishnan

Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, India-born U.S. citizen whose pioneering work in molecular biology won him the 2009 Nobel Prize in chemistry,2009 "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome".

He shared the award with Thomas A Steitz and Ada E Yonath. Born in Chidambaram in Tamil Nadu, Ramakrishnan studied at Baroda University, Ohio University and the University of California, San Diego.

Ramakrishnan was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2010. As he once said that he began to realize that the Nobel Prize could be seen not just as an affirmation of his past work but also as an encouragement to continue to work on interesting problems.
