Down Memory Lane: Indian Nobel Prize Winners



#Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar

Chandrasekhar, better known as Chandra, was born on October 19, 1910, in Lahore, India (now part of Pakistan). He had a bachelors degree in Physics from Presidency College and with a scholarship went on to pursue graduate studies at Cambridge University, England.

He received his Ph.D from Cambridge in 1933. In 1983 Chandrasekhar was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the physical processes involved in the structure and evolution of stars.

He published 10 books and served as the editor of the prominent Astrophysical journal for 19 years. In 1999 NASA launched Chandra, a x-ray observatory named in honor of Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar.

#Amartya Sen

The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 1998 was awarded to Amartya Sen "for his contributions to welfare economics".

He was born in Bolpur, West Bengal, on the campus of Tagore’s Shantiniketan. Currently he is serving as a professor at the Thomas W Lamont University and Harvard University as a Professor of Economics and Philosophy.

He also serves as the chancellor of Nalanda University. In his acceptance speech, Sen said, "Rabindranath Tagore's Universalist, tolerant and rationalist ideals were a strong influence on my thinking, and I often recollect them in these divisive times."
