Delhi Government Initiates 50 MW Rooftop Solar Installation Across 645 Buildings
The Delhi government has approved the installation of 50 megawatts (MW) of grid-connected rooftop solar systems on 645 buildings, including various departments and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The initiative is in line with the recently approved solar policy, which mandates the installation of rooftop solar plants on all government and MCD buildings with a built-up area larger than 500 square meters.
Delhi Power Minister Atishi, who gave the green light to the solar plant installation initiative, praised the policy as one of the best and most progressive in India. The plan encompasses a range of buildings, such as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, bus depots, and power substations, aiming to equip them with rooftop solar plants.
Atishi emphasized that the initiative would contribute to making government buildings more energy-efficient, enabling them to fulfill their energy needs through self-generation of power. Despite the increasing electricity consumption in Delhi, the government's target is to generate 25% of the city's electricity through solar power plants by 2027, according to the power minister.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, during the launch of the solar policy in January, announced that domestic consumers not covered by subsidies would be able to receive zero-amount power bills upon installing rooftop solar plants. The Delhi government already provides free power supply to consumers with a monthly consumption of up to 200 units, while those consuming 201-400 units receive a 50% subsidy.
The comprehensive approach outlined in the solar policy aims to promote sustainability, increase the use of solar power, and align with broader goals for green energy contribution and enhanced total power capacity in Delhi.
