Delhi, Bangalore Witness High Number of Thefts
Bangalore: Bangalore ranks second for the number of thefts which have taken place between 2007 and 2011, as per a recent National Crime Record Bureau report (NCRB). Among the cities Delhi topped the list, while Mumbai consistently maintained its third position. The cities with most number of thefts reported were ranked on four categories, which include residential, commercial, the banking sector and highways, reported V Narayan for TNN.
Delhi registered 32,240 theft cases between 2007 and 2011. While, Bangalore, Mumbai and Hyderabad registered 21,332, 15,650 and 11,419 cases respectively.
As per the report Maharashtra topped the list in terms of maximum thefts among states. The state topped theft charts across banks, commercial establishments, residential areas, railways, and river and sea routes. It was noted that Uttar Pradesh took the lead in highway robberies.
The report recorded the annual rise in theft cases in commercial establishments and residential areas across the nation. It also suggested concern over the three cities-Delhi, Bangalore and Mumbai and said that they could no longer be safe to live or work in.
The report also noted that a total of 4, 65,184 crimes of burglary and theft were reported during the year 2011 as compared to 4, 50,857 crimes during the year 2010, indicating an increase of 3.2 percent.
The share of these crimes to total IPC crimes at the National level was 20.0 percent during the year 2011. However, the share of such crimes has decreased from 20.3 percent in 2010 to 20 percent in the year 2011.
It was also seen that urban agglomerations reported 74.4 thefts (per one lakh population) compared to the all India rate of incidence of thefts.
