Crime against Children Rises in India
Bangalore: India has become one of the most unsafe countries for children with a disturbing 24 percent rise in crimes against children in 2011 compared to the previous year. About 33,100 cases were reported in 2011 in comparison with 26,694 cases in 2010, reports Kounteya Sinha for TNN.
Uttar Pradesh accounted for the highest of total crimes against children in 2011(16.6 percent), followed by Madhya Pradesh (13.2 percent), Delhi (12.8 percent), Maharashtra (10.2 percent), Bihar (6.7 percent) and Andhra Pradesh (6.7 percent). The report ‘Children in India 2012’ brought out by the ministry of statistics and programme implementation is a report on the state of India's children.
It was noted that Maharashtra accounted for 74 percent of the total 27 cases of "buying of girls for prostitution" while West Bengal recorded for 77 percent of the total 113 cases of "selling of girls for prostitution".
43 percent increase in cases of abduction were noted last year, while cases of rape increased by 30 percent. UP and Delhi together accounted for 47.6 percent abduction of children while MP, UP and Maharashtra together accounted for 44.5 percent of child rape cases in 2011.
