Communal Tensions Escalated by 17% from Past Years: Report



BENGALURU: In this computer world where developed countries are focusing on modernization, India is still burning with communal tensions. If we look out at recent statistics, it seems that we care more about religion or caste rather than the progress of the nation. Communal violence rose by 17% in 2015 compared to previous years. The country had witnessed 751 communal riots in 2015 against 644 in 2014. According to a recent statistics on communal riots released by the government in Parliament while replying to a question, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra reported the highest number of communal incidents. Casualties rose marginally from 95 to 97 while the figure of those injured rose significantly from 1921 to 2264.

Madhya Pradesh reported the highest with 64% increase in communal incidents in 2015 from the previous year whereas Karnataka filed nearly 105 incidents against 73 in 2014 - registering a massive 44% of increment. Other states who topped in terms of communal riots were Uttar Pradesh (155), Karnataka (105), Maharashtra (105), Madhya Pradesh (92), Bihar (71), Rajasthan (65), and Gujarat (55) and the states that recorded low communal incidents were Andhra Pradesh (4), Assam (3), Chhattisgarh (2), Tamil Nadu (3), Kerala (3), Odisha (0) and Punjab (0) – reports TOI.
