The Government of India is set to enhance capacity building in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector as part of its 'Bharat 6G Vision'. A two-day workshop, scheduled for September 2-3, will be hosted at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, aiming to provide comprehensive insights into the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) standardisation process.
The workshop, organised by the National Communications Academy-Finance (NCA-F) in collaboration with the ITU Area Office Delhi and IISc Bangalore, is expected to attract over 200 participants. These will include government officials, industry representatives, academicians, researchers, and students, all of whom will benefit from the event's focus on grooming the next generation of ICT leaders.
Through interactive sessions and panel discussions, the event promises to equip participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute to the global standards-making process at ITU. A significant emphasis will be placed on fostering leadership in ICT standardisation and patent processes.
The first day will feature a panel discussion on enhancing India’s role in the ITU standards-making process, while the second day will be dedicated to Intellectual Property Rights, focusing on Standard Essential Patents in the telecom sector. The workshop will conclude with a session on the upcoming World Telecommunications Standardisation Assembly (WTSA) 2024, which India will host for the first time in October in Delhi.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has articulated a vision for India to be a leading contributor in the design, development, and deployment of 6G technology by 2030. To support this vision, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has already funded two next-generation testbeds to advance 6G research and is currently evaluating 470 proposals under the 'Accelerated Research on 6G Ecosystem.'
This workshop marks a crucial step in India’s journey toward becoming a global leader in 6G technology, building on the foundation laid by the 5G Test Bed, which was inaugurated by PM Modi in May 2022.
