Cabinet Greenlights Two Delhi Metro Lines Costing Rs 8,399 Crore
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the development of two additional corridors for the Delhi Metro. These corridors, from Lajpat Nagar to Saket G Block and from Inderlok to Indraprastha, will require an investment of Rs 8,399 crore. This funding will come from various sources including the Central government, the Delhi government, and international financing agencies, as announced by Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur.
The combined length of these two corridors will be 20.762 kilometres. The Inderlok-Indraprastha corridor, extending the Green Line, will offer interchange points with several other lines such as the Red, Yellow, Airport Line, Magenta, Violet, and Blue Lines. On the other hand, the Lajpat Nagar - Saket G Block corridor will connect the Silver, Magenta, Pink, and Violet Lines, and will be fully elevated with eight stations.
The Inderlok-Indraprastha Line, with 11.349 kilometres of underground lines and 1.028 kilometres of elevated lines, will include ten stations. This extension will notably improve connectivity to the Bahadurgarh region of Haryana, allowing commuters from these areas to access central and east Delhi directly via the Green Line. Additionally, eight new interchange stations will be established at strategic points along these corridors.
The construction of these new corridors aims to significantly enhance connectivity across the Delhi Metro network. Currently, the Delhi Metro's fourth phase expansion is already underway, encompassing a network of 65 kilometres. The completion of these new corridors is anticipated by March 2026, with the Delhi Metro already commencing pre-bid activities and tender document preparations.
Presently, the Delhi Metro operates a vast network spanning 391 kilometres with 286 stations, making it one of the fastest-growing metro networks globally. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) is actively progressing with its expansion plans, poised to further augment the city's public transportation infrastructure.
