In the Interim Budget, the government has proposed to withdraw tax demands up to Rs 25,000 for the year 2009-10. This move is expected to benefit around 1 crore taxpayers. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has highlighted that a major focus of the budget is to enhance the services for taxpayers and there would be no changes in tax rates for direct and indirect taxes, including import duties.

"Three major Railway economic corridors programmes will be implemented. These are energy, mineral and cement corridors; port connectivity corridors and high traffic density corridors. The projects have been identified under the PM Gati Shakti for enabling multi-modal connectivity. They will improve logistics efficiency and reduce cost", said Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.

The projected fiscal deficit for the Financial Year 2024 has been revised to 5.8 percent. Fiscal deficit is the difference between the government's revenue and expenses. It is anticipated to remain at 5.1 percent of the gross domestic product.

The Minister also highlighted that female enrollment in STEM courses has grown by 28 percent in the last decade. "Making triple talaq illegal, reservation of 1/3 seats for women in Parliament and state assemblies, over 70 % houses under PM Awas Yojana to women have increased their dignity", she added.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget 2024 in Parliament today. This will be an interim budget as it comes just ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. Ms Sitharaman has arrived at the Finance Ministry office. She will present the budget at 11 am. This is Nirmala Sitharaman's sixth Union Budget. The full-fledged budget will be presented by the new government that comes to power after the elections.

President Droupadi Murmu addressed a joint session of the two Houses of Parliament in the newly constructed Parliament building.
