Budget 2024: FM announces Rooftop Solarisation for free electricity to 1 Crore Households
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, during the presentation of the interim budget for 2024, announced the Rooftop Solarisation and Free Electricity scheme. Approximately one crore households will benefit from this initiative, receiving complimentary electricity up to 300 units each month. Sitharaman emphasized that this program is expected to result in significant savings for households, ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 18,000. This is made possible by offering free solar electricity and enabling households to sell any excess electricity to DISCOMs.
“Through rooftop solarization, one crore households will be enabled to obtain up to 300 units of free electricity every month. This scheme follows the resolve of the Hon’ble Prime Minister on the historic day of consecration of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya", said the finance minister.
Following the grand Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony in Ayodhya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Pradhanmantri Suryodaya Yojana, which entails the installation of solar panels on one crore houses nationwide. This initiative, marking the Prime Minister's first decision after the ceremony, is aimed at providing solar power systems on rooftops. The Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, a state-run entity, has been appointed as the nodal agency for the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, with the goal of equipping 10 million households with rooftop solar systems.
Rooftop solar refers to the placement of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels on the roof of residential or commercial structures. The Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana is a recently introduced initiative that seeks to deliver electricity to individuals with low to moderate incomes by facilitating the installation of solar rooftops.
