Bangalore Home to Over 3,800 Malnourished Kids

BANGALORE: Think twice before wasting any extra food.  It is indeed an alarming fact that developing country like India is still gripped with the problem of malnutrition. It is one of the leading causes of all childhood deaths. And malnourishment at an early age can lead to long-term consequences as it affects motor, sensory, cognitive, social and emotional development.

Recently, in India’s IT Capital, Bangalore, government data comes out with a heart wrecking figures where more than 3,800 malnourished children are identified from this city.

Many victims are below 5 years of age as identified by the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike. Most of them are residents of slums areas located in Pantharapalya along Mysore Road, SK Garden near Jayamahal and DJ Halli in North Bangalore.

Such victims are treated at the Nutritional Rehabilitation Centres at Victoria Hospital, Bowring Hospital, and Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health.

BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana said that they will soon take up an initiative to identify more such children and tackle the problem. There will be a five-day health check-up camp, he added.

Lakshminarayana added "Around 7 lakh children are expected to take part in this camp at all BBMP hospitals. BBMP will provide free treatment for malnourished children," reports The Times of India.
