Aramco Digital appoints Ex-Rakuten chief Tareq Amin as CEO
Tareq Amin, the ex-CEO of Rakuten Mobile and Rakuten Symphony, which focuses on Open RAN technology, has taken on the role of CEO at Aramco Digital, a newly established subsidiary of the Saudi oil company Aramco. He mentioned that he will provide more information about his new position and its responsibilities once the official announcement is made but did not provide additional details during a brief conversation with the publication.
Amin quit Rakuten abruptly in August abruptly. The executive posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account that his “next mission” would involve “contributing to the incredible push for a digital revolution in Saudi Arabia”. Aramco Digital was launched in January this year, which aims to “accelerate digital transformation within the Kingdom and the MENA region”. The oil giant had then, signed agreements with video collaboration and conferencing company Zoom and IT services firm Accenture for system integration and digital solution services.
This followed with the signing of a non-binding pact with Samsung Electronics for “a strategic collaboration that would localize an industrial 5G technology ecosystem, starting with private networks, in Saudi Arabia”. Amin’s role is likely to include a heavy focus on private 5G network deployments and collaboration with Samsung. But the full extent of the executive’s role and Aramco Digital’s ambitions will only be revealed after a formal announcement.
