Apple Teams Up with Tech Mahindra to Boost Apple Maps in India
Apple has initiated extensive ground surveys across India to enhance its 'Look Around' feature on Apple Maps, which provides 360-degree panoramic street views. Partnering with Tech Mahindra, Apple aims to collect high-quality map data while complying with local regulations.
Apple is employing both vehicular and portable survey systems. Vehicles equipped with advanced mapping technology are gathering data in states like Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh. For pedestrian areas, portable systems with iPhones, iPads, and backpack-mounted cameras are being used in Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.
Street-level mapping has historically faced privacy challenges. Google’s earlier efforts in India were halted due to security concerns, compounded by incidents of accidental WiFi data collection. To address such issues, Apple blurs faces and license plates and allows users to request additional blurring within 15 minutes, prioritizing privacy protection.
India’s geospatial regulations prohibit foreign companies from providing high-precision maps independently. The 2021 Geospatial Data Guidelines require foreign firms to partner with Indian companies for high-accuracy data collection. This collaboration with Tech Mahindra ensures Apple adheres to local laws while benefiting from Indian firms' preferential access to ground stations and positioning services.
Apple’s ongoing efforts signify a major leap in navigation technology, promising enriched map experiences for Indian users while aligning with the country’s regulatory framework.
