Anu Nakka, First Indian-American Elected to Public Office in Milpitas

Anu Nakka has been elected to the Milpitas Unified School District’s Board of Education, becoming the first Indian elected to public office in Milpitas.

Anu Nakka has been elected to the Milpitas Unified School District’s (MUSD) Board of Education as the first Indian-American to be elected to public office in Milpitas. In an interview with The Beat, Nakka stated that she did not expect this support and thought it was a time for a change, collaboration, and teamwork.

As a child, Nakka found that she was keen on education, learning new things, and growing in any way she could. She immersed herself in studying different languages and was active in extracurricular activities. She also participated in learning traditional folk dance as part of her formal education.

Her love for education blossomed as she grew older. She has served on various PTAs and has been deeply involved in supporting her daughters’ schools in different ways. Her youngest is an 8th grader at Rancho Middle School, and her oldest is a senior at Milpitas High. Nakka shifted from India to Milpitas in 2001 to be with her husband. She had never expected to be given this new opportunity.

Nakka mentioned that she had never expected to reach what she is today. She also added that when she came to this country, she did not know how much potential and resources would be offered to her. It is a huge deal, and it feels very rewarding for her.

Despite being a newcomer to the Milpitas political scene, Nakka still received support from various elected officials and community leaders. Responding to her ability to attract support and ultimately win the election, she underlined three keywords: walk, knock, and talk. She stated that talking to people one-on-one made a huge impact and difference during her campaign; she thinks it is all about connecting with people.

Nakka will be officially sworn in on 13th December and plans to take the position from day one, and she is aware of the fact that it will initially be a learning process. Therefore, Nakka notes that she wants to listen and learn before anything else.

Nakka expressed her gratitude to everyone who believed in her and trusted her initiatives, support, and walking. She stated that she was amazed by the volunteers and Milpitains. She also wished to offer something she learned after going through her campaign, which is some meaningful words of wisdom. Nakka highlighted that the US has given her a lot and that it is never late for anybody. If anyone wishes to do something to contribute, it is never too late to do so.
