An Indian-American To Succeed the Tufts University Presidency

Following the majestic presidency of Monaco at Tufts University, an Indian-American is succeeding the regime to uplift the varsity pride via his extended commitment to excellence.   

Sunil Kumar, an Indian-American professor, has acquired the title of the next president of Tufts University by the board of Trustees. Dr. Kumar is a provost and senior vice-president of John Hopkins University, with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. This expert in operations management will likely succeed the current President, Anthony P. Monaco, in 2023, post his realm at the university for a period of 12 years.

Dr. Kumar holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Mangalore University and a master’s in computer science from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He moved to the US to resume his Ph.D. degree at the University of Illinois.         

Prof. Kumar currently serves as the head of John Hopkin University, assisting varied teaching and research missions, and critically overseeing schools, various interdisciplinary programs, and academic centers. Earlier in an interview, he highlighted the challenges encompassed in the academic journey in the US while correspondingly praising the education criteria he received in India. He stated that the schools and universities where he commenced his teaching work proffered him a welcoming environment, which had motivated him critically to take risks and thereby succeed in them.

As a former dean of the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, Dr. Kumar firmly believes that Indian American professors can facilitate a global perspective, with an increased will to take risks and stretch themselves, with an increased sense of service. Furthermore, Dr. Peter Dolan, chairperson of the board of business and chair of the presidential search committee at Tufts, when addressing Dr. Kumar’s presidency selection, stated that Dr. Kumar is likely to proffer a lifelong commitment to excellence in higher education and a robust record as a leader, teacher, and colleague.

Following President Monaco’s leadership at Tufts with excellency for the past 11 years, Dr. Kumar’s commitment to research, learning, civic management, and innovation will furthermore stimulate Tuft’s mission of improving the world for a better place.
