Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has highlighted the pivotal role of AI and data analytics in improving enforcement of intellectual property (IP) and conducting trademark searches, highlighting their significance in India's vision of 'Viksit Bharat.' Addressing the 'National Intellectual Property Awards 2024,' he underscored the government's efforts to build a robust IP ecosystem in India through legislative changes and administrative actions.
Goyal reiterated the requirement of more stringent protection of copyright in order to secure businesses and creators, affirming that innovation was at the heart of India's economic progress. "Innovation has been with us forever in our DNA. We are also happy that 'zero' started from India and chess is finally being seen as an old Indian game. Innovation will characterize India's march to a Viksit Bharat", he said.
The minister also emphasized the importance of research and development (R&D) in the future of India as a technology powerhouse of the world. He reemphasized the government's commitment towards scientific progress through the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (NRF), aimed at enhancing collaboration between the government, private enterprise, and academia. "The NRF will be an important enabler for science and technology innovation", he further stated.
India's IP economy has come a long way, with the nation upgrading its ranking in the Global Innovation Index from 81 in 2015 to 39 in the most recent index. India is also ranked sixth among global trademark filings, with close to 100,000 patents issued last year.
To further strengthen India's IP framework, Goyal made a call for more judicial support in IP cases, suggesting the setting up of specialized IP benches of High Courts. He also suggested implementing an internship program for law students to better understand the IP ecosystem.
The minister emphasized the government's commitment to making India a pioneer in innovation, technology, and intellectual property rights protection, guaranteeing a sound framework for entrepreneurship and business growth.
