After Maternity Benefits, Flipkart Introduces Child Adoption Policy

BANGALORE: The e-commerce giant Flipkart is soon going to take away the job sector.

Earlier this month, Flipkart declared an employee friendly maternity program and on Monday, announced an adoption assistance program in its HR policies through Twitter.

Effective from July10, Flipkart will offer an allowance worth 50000 to employees who plan to adopt children. The money can be used for legal, processing, regulatory costs or any other expenses associated with the adoption process.

Flipkart will be providing same maternity leave facilities to women adopting children under the age of 12, as they have for biological mothers. The women employees will be given six months paid leave along and four months of flexible working hours.

Flipkart spokesperson told, if the adopted child is more than a year old then, the employee can three months paid leave and four months of flexible working hours.

Male employees can also opt for the six months of paid adoption leave and four months of flexible working hours if they are adopting children.

The e-commerce spokes person also said, "If the employee is looking at extending their adoption leaves, but they don't have enough leaves left, they can take unpaid leave for up to three months and continuity on the same job is assured.”

The adopting employee can also seek counseling and referral services from the company. The company will lend support to them for, child care, work-life balance, emotional health, parenting family health and much more.

However the internet brand also clarifies that leaves won’t be granted to women wanting to sponser children in any institutional care programme.

Women and child development minister Maneka Gandhi, comments on this initiative by Flipkart, "It is a great step forward that Indian couples are being encouraged to adopt children. I congratulate Flipkart for such a novel CSR (corporate social responsibility).”
