The Disappearing Water Bodies of the World

Salton Sea (US)

This dying lake was once featured in Michael Jackson’s music video ‘In the Closet’ in 1992 and now it’s on the verge of drying up. Salton Sea occupies the lowest elevations of the Salton Sink in the Colorado Desert, California and was formed by an accident in 1905, when the Colorado River broke through a canal and flooded into the dry Salton Sink.

Sadly now, there is no constant rainfall in the area and the sea depends on the irrigation runoffs from the local rivers and other farms. Unfortunately, here more water evaporates than it enters the sea because of the huge salinity rate. Recently, the State of California proposed a 10-year plan to allocate $383 million over a decade to deal with all the three issues in the sea: dust, birds and the local economy. Getting long planned and projects on the conservation of lake is the only hope to save one of the major lakes in the city.
