The Deadliest Plane Crashes in the Past Five Years


Bangalore: The recent plane crash of an Asiana Airline-Boeing 777 that was approaching from Seoul, Korea killed two people with casualties of around 130 while landing at San Francisco. The incident has once again brought back the memories of the most deadly plane crashes that have occurred in different parts of the world. Some of the deadliest plane crashes in the last five years, as listed by Flight Safety Foundation are:

1. Dana Air crash of an MD-83 in 2012:

Dana Air Boeing, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft was operating from Abuja to Lagos.  The flight 9J-992 crashed in one of the busy commercial areas of Lagos in Nigeria on the unfateful day of 3rd June, 2012.

Prior to the accident, the crew reported of a trouble in engine and declared an emergency of 11 nautical miles (20 km) from the airport. The crash was considered to be caused by the failure of its dual engine followed by forced landing. It took away the lives of all the 153 people on board, 6 of them were crew members.  This plane crash is by far the 29th loss of the McDonnell Douglas MD-80 aircraft type and also the third worst plane crash in Nigeria.
