TN to Focus on Global Promotions to Support Growth in IT and ITes Industry

BENGALURU: Today, software use underpins almost every function of a company and hence transact more and more jobs in IT industry. For Tamilnadu (TN), it started in 2002 when TN state government released its revised Industry-specific Policy for the IT industry (after 1997) and in past few years, Tamil Nadu has attracted huge investments for the IT and IT-enabled services (ITeS) industry.
TN has emerged as an industry-friendly government and already employs more than 4 lakh professionals in the IT services sector. Even so, experts suggest that the strong promotional strategy and improved international visibility is needed to be improvised.
Reportedly, TN attracted IT investments of
14, 855 crores in 2015-16, however, the prediction made in the report project the rise in investments to reach
27, 857 crores by 2020, as per the report by industry body ASSOCHAM.
The report also mentions of the share of total IT investments in other states of the country, according to which Karnataka rests at the top, followed by Gujarat, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and then TN.
While presenting TN’s budget in July, O Panneerselvam (finance minister of TN) implied growth in software exports by 10 percent to 12 percent per annum to
95000 for 2015-16. Chennai (TN) is home to more than 50 multinationals, all in all.
Insiders and Business experts have commented that TN has taken a back seat in the past seven years In terms of share of exports; Karnataka, Gurgaon-Noida, Mumbai-Pune and APTelangana are ahead of TN. Even so, smaller cities such as Coimbatore, Trichy, Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Salem have shared a large portion of IT investments for the state.
To boost startup culture in TN, IT industry body Nasscom and the TN government had signed a pact in March this year for the establishment of `startup warehouse', and offer resources to at least top50 startup.
"We have created a good ecosystem. All we need is to support that with our hard work, in terms of creating more visibility for the state among our customers and investors," says K Purushothaman, senior director of Nasscom, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
