Spotify & Tulika Publishers Release Kids Podcast In 3 Languages

Music streaming giant, Spotify teams up with Indian publishing house Tulika Publishers to produce multilingual podcasts for children.

Spotify has teamed up with Tulika Publishers in a bid to attract younger audiences to its music streaming platform. The two companies have created a storytelling podcast called Talking tales from Tulika which will cover a range of topics from friendship and kindness to acceptance and equality.

The podcast is produced by Asiaville and is available in English, Hindi and Tamil with the aim of being as accessible as possible for little listeners. Tulika Publishers have worked under the tagline ‘many languages, many voices’ for a number of years and their recent foray into the podcasting world seems to be following the company motto.

The stories will be a collection of folktales, fables and new stories that will engage a new generation. The producers and publishers wanted a way to reinvigorate the tales and stories we all grew up with and the partnership with Spotify is a way of bringing the old and the new together.

For many parents, encouraging children to read can be quite challenging in a world filled with screens and technology. Spotify and Tulika Publishers hope that their podcast can give kids a love of storytelling which will translate across mediums.

The focus seems to be on creating a storytelling podcast that encourages children to enjoy listening to stories that help them develop good morals and characters and is inline with Spotify’s commitment to bringing music and audio content to everyone regardless of age, nationality, gender or orientation.

As of writing, there are three episodes available in the Talking Tales from Tulika podcast. The first episode, entitled Food Fun, went live on the 28th of August and is a mix of stories all about food.

One of Tulika’s most well loved characters, Gajapati Kulapati, an adorable elephant, entered the podcasting world in episode two of Talking Tales from Tulkia. The Gajapati Kulapati episode consists of four stories in the 22 minute episode and is suitable for children aged two and up.

The third episode is called Animals Big and Small and features a variety of stories about all manner of different animals including a camel who doesn’t want to leave it’s owner and a little snail who goes on a big adventure.

All the stories are aimed at young children and are narrated by a variety of voice actors who use sound and rhythm to engage their listener. The stories are told in the three languages which can be accessed by following the links in the podcast’s description on Spotify.

The stories are simple enough for little children to follow but engaging and informative too. They feature songs, rhythms and sounds that are easy for children to repeat and understand.

This new podcast will be welcomed by many parents who have found it difficult to manage youngsters kept at home over the last few months, but also by podcasters the world over who are looking to streaming services to improve their multilingual options and offerings.

Spotify’s range of podcasts has grown significantly in recent years and will likely continue to grow, especially as they seem keen to branch out into children’s entertainment and educational podcasts too.

The release of Talking Tales from Tulika in three different languages shows a commitment to widening the audience base for regionally and nationally produced content. It suggests that Spotify are recognising the importance of podcasts with cultural and educational value and are trying to share them outside of their country of origin.

Podcasters considering streaming platforms for their work may want to make Spotify top of their list in the light of this new release. For those wanna-be podcasters, now would be a good time to get in on the game.

Many businesses and individuals have begun creating podcasts over the last few months, having found themselves with more time on their hands and a somewhat captive audience to target. For those new to the podcasting world, the announcement of Talking Tales could be an opportunity to tap into a newly emerging market.

The many parents and children heading over to Spotify to check out Talking Tales from Tulika are sure to check out similar story based podcasts aimed at young children. Similarly, with the Talking Tales available in three different languages, there will be a market for other podcasts in those languages.

Starting a podcast couldn’t be easier nowadays as the cost of microphones and editing software has dropped dramatically over the last decade. If you are thinking of starting your own podcast, perhaps as a response to the Talking Tales from Tulika announcement there are plenty of guides and instructional articles on the internet which can help you. This guide, for instance, covers all aspects of starting a new podcast from choosing a name to, selecting equipment and monetising your podcast.

Whether or not Spotify continues to develop its range of children’s storytelling podcasts remains to be seen. The deal with Tulika Publishers seems to have gone very well for both parties and for many listeners, parents or not, the branching out of the music streaming giant can only be categorised as a good thing.

Hopefully, many other children’s publishing houses across the world will bring their stories to similar streaming platforms as a way of re-engaging their audiences in a new, technology friendly way.
