Smokers Pay More Than MRP for a Pack Of Cigarette

BANGALORE: The recently announced Budget’14 indeed impact the smokers to a great extent as they will have to shell out more for the puff as Finance Minister Arun Jaitley proposed a steep hike in duty on cigarettes in the range of 11-72 percent.

Due to which confusion is looming in the market or for instance among the panwalas and kirana stores over the price of cigarettes and now shopkeepers or retailers are taking advantage to increase the price much more than the maximum retail price that is printed on a cigarette pack unofficially, reports John Sarkar, The Times of India.

At present, smokers are compelled to shell out 200-220 for a pack of 20 Classic cigarettes that sports an MRP of just 170. Also, a Gold Flake pack of 10 (MRP 85) is being sold for 90-110.

On the other hand, So far well known cigarette companies like ITC and Godfrey Phillips have not officially increased the prices.

Pawan Chaurasiya, a panwala in South Delhi exclaimed, "We are buying cigarettes at premium prices from company salesmen. They have told us that cigarette companies have raised prices and the new packs will have the new MRPs," reports TOI.

Unlike other products, the prices of cigarette always left its consumers puzzle and also most of the time the prices increases even prior to formal announcement in the Budget.
