President, PM Pay Tribute To Indira Gandhi

NEW DELHI: President Pranab Mukherjee and Vice President Hamid Ansari offered floral tributes to former prime minister Indira Gandhi on her 30th death anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted a remembrance message.

Mukherjee, Ansari, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and party general secretary Rahul Gandhi visited Indira Gandhi's memorial "Shakti Sthal" on the banks of the Yamuna.

Sonia Gandhi sat next to Manmohan Singh and Mukherjee as prayers were sung at the memorial where Indira Gandhi's last rites were performed after her Oct 31, 1984 assassination.

Modi said in a tweet: "I join my fellow countrymen and women in remembering former PM Indira Gandhi on her Punya Tithi (death anniversary)."

Indira Gandhi, born Nov 19, 1917, was prime minister of India for 16 years -- over two terms.

She was assassinated by two of her Sikh bodyguards to avenge the assault on the Golden Temple by the army in June that year. The army was ordered to clear the shrine of Sikh militants.
