Washington: A leading U.S. daily is of the view that Bharatiya Janata Party’s Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi cannot hope to lead India effectively if he “inspires fear and antipathy among” many, particularly Muslims.

Editorially commenting on Gujarat Chief Minister “Narendra Modi‘s Rise in India,” influential New York Times said “His rise to power is deeply troubling to many Indians, especially the country’s 138 million Muslims and its many other minorities.” “They worry he would exacerbate sectarian tensions that have subsided somewhat in the last decade,” it said noting that in 2002, rioters “savagely killed nearly 1,000 people, most of whom were part of the Muslim minority” in Gujarat. “India is a country with multiple religions, more than a dozen major languages and numerous ethnic groups and tribes,” the Times said. “Mr. Modi cannot hope to lead it effectively if he inspires fear and antipathy among many of its people.”

Modi has been denied a U.S. visa since 2005 for his alleged role or inaction during the 2002 riots. Supporters of Modi, the Times noted “argue that an investigation commissioned by India’s Supreme Court cleared him of wrongdoing in the riots.” “And they insist that Mr. Modi, who is widely admired by middle-class Indians for making Gujarat one of India’s fastest-growing states, can revive the economy.”

But “Modi’s strident Hindu nationalism has fuelled public outrage,” the daily said recalling his “incendiary response” to a question from a British news agency whether he regretted the killings in 2002. “Modi has shown no ability to work with opposition parties or tolerate dissent,” the Times said. “His economic record in Gujarat is not entirely admirable, either,” it said noting, “Muslims in Gujarat, for instance, are much more likely to be poor than Muslims in India as a whole, even though the state has a lower poverty rate than the country.”

1: "Savagely killed the pilgrims in Godhra" why don't US and other newspapers report that incident which is the root cause of other incidents which don't have any relation to Modi. It's about time Congress stop using these scare tactics to blemish Modi. They ruined the country in 10yrs and missed a golden opportunity to become another economic power instead the country is struggling to keep up with the erosion of economic might which was brought by the hardworking Indians at home and abroad. And NY Times should stay out of Indian Politics if they do not have the facts.
they better try to fix their issues at home eg. 17Trillion debt and Football rapes, Church scandals and so on ...

3: 138 million of Muslims are poor in India. This tiny little minority is supposed to be supressed? 138 million of them?

This "little" minority has ruled India for 800 yrs. It cannot be the fault of Hindus if they are poor. And much less of Modi. Come on, NYT.

4: He might be feared by fundamentalists and terrorists but not by Muslims as a whole.

Why should Muslims fear him? Because of a conflict 10 yrs ago that took place when he was since 3 months in office?

Such fightings take place much more frequently in other states.

In fact it was congress who engineered the riots in Gujarat at that time to bring down Modi. But his popularity grows because unlike congress he is after development of a state because he happens to be the chief minister. Look at Delhi, the capital of India known as rape capital of India, and congress is ruling there. It is time your paper understands the feelings of all Indians including minorities.

6: Really!! and you care about India now, I mean please name the "A leading U.S. daily".. first and then take the pain of reproducing the article so we can be sure this really happened, next, why on earth is a US newspaper so worried about a section of the Indian population when they are in bitter position themselves with people of similar disposition, in that country..Interesting. First you throw up an article and then rile in with your own comments in support of that purported article.. what a way to start a discussion. I suggest that an open discussion is better. While it may be true on some fronts and false on many more, the issue is not Modi's plank of sectarianism that is fearful, it is what the media has made it to be, that is scarier..we have had sectarian politics going on in this country from the time the British subjugated India, but then evidently no one wants to talk about that since it is long gone..sectarian policies elsewhere in the world may not get as much attention since we as a country are forthright in our approach and accept our mistakes in public. Which other country has had the courage and capability to do the same and still prosper, pray tell me? and people talk about progress in other countries where the only known agenda seems to be subverting the agreements, instigating violence internally and externally, providing support to others to fan hate etc..Why are we all so fascinated with Mr. Modi.. that is a separate topic for discussion!!!Jai Hind..

7: Most of the Muslims who want development are also supporting Modi. It's not Muslims but Congress government and its followers who are alarmed by Modi's rise.

8: Someone tell whoever this is... Sectarian tensions HAVEN'T subsided. And Modi HASN'T been yet accused in 2002 riots! What non sense these people speak! Please Speak Facts, and SiliconIndia, please PUBLISH facts!

9: What is this article??? Is it the NYT? or some bullshit newspaper. Modi is already the PM of India whether you like it or not. It is the first time in the entire world that a leader has been appointed by the public due to adoration. Due to his positive deeds. The growth that he has brought in. And due to the legitimacy he shows in his promises by fulfilling them even at personal cost. We cannot and will not have a better person as the PM of India and, I think this edition of the NYT is destined to be recycled as toilet paper as it not even worth reading more than 1 paragraph. Stupid NYT. Sack those journalists who try and divide us Modi is the ultimate uniting power. And, we will rise as a nation as one.

13: Modi induced FEAR? Wow! NYT indulging in PREJUDICED journalism? "His rise to power is troubling to many Indians". Really? Now, where did these MORONS masquerading as JOURNALISTS get this information from? Or is it just another dude posting his pseudo-secular blog aka BURKHA, RAJDEEP, NIDHI..? Whatever, we as INDIANS care LESS what NYT thinks about Modi. It has its country to monitor and it better do a good job at it. We as INDIANS know BEST what suits India and the MASSIVE consensus is for MODI to be at the HELM. So, NYT can shove its opinion u-know-where..

15: (OCT 29 ‘13) People are aghast that Modi went ahead with his Patna rally after half a dozen bombs had already exploded at the venue and several had been killed. Others are aghast that the Home Minister went to a Bollywood music function hours after the explosions and deaths in Patna. No one is aghast that life goes on as usual in New Delhi despite the impending simultaneous nuclear destruction of Washington, New York and RAW; there is no evacuation of New Delhi / Delhi.

(Oct 19 ‘13) I said “All the stupid niggers of the U.N. Security Council (the five permanent members) need to be reminded that India is the sole superpower; after destroying Washington and New York with its nuclear warheads emplaced in U.S. cities, India can compel the United States to use its nuclear-armed ICBMs to destroy, say, Moscow and St. Petersburg, or Beijing and Shanghai or any other country in the world, or lose more of its own cities”. It is to try to counter the effect of what I said that Manmohan Singh is going to Moscow and Beijing tomorrow. But what he says does not matter, only what India’s legitimate ruler says matters. It was because of what I said that Saudi Arabia rejected membership of the UN Security Council a day after being elected to it. Saudi Arabia, like India, has suffered several stampedes at religious gatherings instigated through proxies of the CIA one of which killed almost 1,500 people.

(Oct 15 ‘13) The rumor that a bridge to a temple they were standing on was collapsing that caused the stampede in Madhya Pradesh killing over a hundred was spread by RAW (see WhatYouShouldKnowAboutRAWDOTblogspotDOTcom ) in response to the following comment of mine and in support of the Italian woman so the Italian woman could express “condolences” over the stupid behavior of the inferior Indian niggers. Just as all terrorism in India is instigated by the CIA via proxies in the subcontinent including India’s RAW, all temple stampedes in India are instigated by RAW as a part of psychological warfare against India on behalf of the white countries. I have described RAW arranging for practitioners of an Indian spiritual discipline, whose understanding of gravity and inertia I called superior to that of Albert Einstein, to be physically attacked and driven away in Noida and Madhya Pradesh on the C.I.A.'s orders because of my comment. CIA-RAW’s war against India in the field of science is monumental and remains thoroughly covered up by Indian as well as foreign governments and media. All poverty and economic deprivation in India is a consequence of first the British and now the CIA’s war against India. All forms of warfare against India is waged with the help of their Indian proxies. Just as what is said below about the flecks of filth that are Indian politicians or Manmohan Singh or RAW, etc., does not change the basic fact that India is now the sole superpower, even if the stampede was due to the stupidity of Indians -- I have said in my press releases that India’s population is a mountain of S-H-I-T -- it does not change this basic fact, described below, that India is now the sole superpower:-

All the evil in India comes from the United States where the equivalent of a Pope was psychologist B. F. Skinner whose school of psychology a paper I published destroyed -- ‘B. F. Skinner’s Monumental Crime’ : BFSkinnersMonumentalCrimeDOTblogspotDOTcom . But he lives on in the form of the CIA which continues to this day to wage war against India and myself with the help of 24-hour satellite surveillance -- see ‘Nuclear Supremacy For India Over U.S.’ : NuclearSupremacyForIndiaOverUSDOTblogspotDOTcom -- and the CIA is simply the essence of the United States and its population.
